Garden Items

Many of the items we use to develop and manage our gardens have been arounc for some time. Greenhouses and ponds, for instance, date back thousands of years. Such history is an added reason to celebrate the garden buildings, design features and utensils we know so well.

We take a lot of things for granted in our gardens. But perhaps we should pause for a moment and consider how some of the items we use have a long and sometimes surprising history. 

Lawn Mower

A lawn mower & lawnmower is a machine, manual or motorized, used for mowing the gardens, sports fields, etc., so as to produce a carpet of grass of uniform height.

The Greenhouse

 The Wctorians were keen gardeners and great enthusiasts of the greenhouse. They attached greenhouses to homes or erected free-standing ones in their gardens The aim was not just to extend the growing year, but also to provide shelter and warmth to the exotic plants and vegetables people brought back from the corners of the British Empire. Greenhouses are not a \fIctorian invention, however. Their history goes back to at least the time of the Ancient Romans. But Roman gardeners did not have access to glass.

Instead, they used slabs of a mineral called selenite. If V this was not readily available, they rubbed oil into sheets of cloth and hung these above their plants. The first glass greenhouses appeared 800 years ago. Wealthy Italians installed them in the gardens of their villas. Over the following centuries, the idea of greenhouses caught on across Europe until today, when they are a common sight in gardens everywhere. 

 The Shed 

 Sheds are the ideal repository for all the paraphernalia associated with a garden such as tools, chairs, tables, bulbs and pots. Anyone who has ever taken gardening seriously has had a shed of one sort or another, often using local materials to construct it.
